Frequently Asked Questions

What insurance does an electrician need in QLD?
Electricians in QLD require a QBCC Electrical Contractor Licence and an individual Electrical Worker Occupational Licence (EWOL) from the Electrical Safety Office. For insurance, Public Liability insurance of at least $5M–$20M is strongly recommended, as electrical faults can cause catastrophic fires and property damage. Tools & Equipment insurance is also widely used to protect expensive test equipment and trade tools.
Do I need a QBCC licence to do electrical work?
Yes. In Queensland, all electrical contracting work requires a QBCC Electrical Contractor Licence, as well as an individual Electrical Worker Occupational Licence (EWOL) from the Electrical Safety Office. Both licences are required simultaneously — one alone is not sufficient. Working without either licence is an offence under Queensland's Electrical Safety Act 2002 and can result in fines of up to $8,050 per offence.
What is public liability insurance for tradies?
Public liability insurance for tradies covers you if your work causes injury to a third party (such as a client or bystander) or damage to their property. For example, if you accidentally crack a water main during excavation or a client trips over your tools and is injured, your public liability policy covers the resulting claims and legal costs. Most builders, councils and principal contractors require tradies to hold a minimum of $5M–$20M public liability cover before allowing them on site.
How much does tradie insurance cost?
Tradie insurance costs vary significantly by trade type, coverage level, turnover and claims history. As a rough guide: public liability insurance for a sole trader can range from $72–$180/month depending on trade risk; tools & equipment insurance typically starts from $22–$55/month; contract works insurance from $38–$80/month. The best way to get an accurate price is to use our free wizard and receive quotes from verified Australian brokers — there's no obligation and no cold calls.
What happens if I work without a contractor's licence?
Working without a contractor's licence when one is required is a serious offence in all Australian states. In Queensland, the QBCC Act 1991 provides for penalties of up to $32,600 per offence for unlicensed building work. Beyond the fine, unlicensed contractors may face prosecution, be required to refund payments received, and find that their insurance policies are voided for work performed without the required licence. Always verify your licence status before quoting on jobs.
What is a Certificate of Currency?
A Certificate of Currency (CoC) is an official document issued by your insurer confirming that you hold a current insurance policy. It details your coverage type, coverage limit, policy number and expiry date. Clients, builders and project managers routinely request a CoC before allowing you to work on their sites — it's your proof of insurance. Know Your Cover helps you store, access and download all your Certificates of Currency from one dashboard, anytime you need them for a new contract.
How do I get a tradie licence in Australia?
Tradie licensing varies by trade and state. In Queensland, most building and construction trades are licensed through the QBCC (Queensland Building and Construction Commission) at qbcc.qld.gov.au. In NSW, licences are issued by NSW Fair Trading; in Victoria by the VBA; in WA through Building and Energy. To apply, you generally need to demonstrate your trade qualifications, experience hours, and pay a licensing fee. Use Know Your Cover's free requirements wizard to see exactly which licences apply to your trade and state.
